Stop! That's Bullying!
|
|
So, What's
it All About? Patty and her friends are having
a fun party at her house but one of her guests
is unhappy and hiding from a bully in the laundry room.
The audience, through participation in songs, and discussions
with the characters learn valuable lessons about bullying
and what to do about it, such as:
- What it feels like to
be bullied/picked on;
- What are some things
you can do if you are being bullied to protect yourself;
- What to do if you are
a bystander and witness someone being bullied
- why bystanders are so
important (all kids get to participate as active bystanders
in the play); and
- Why it's important not
to fight with a bully.
Also,
children are encouraged to continue discussing the topic
to help them understand just what bullying is (in all
of it's forms) and come up with creative solutions for
dealing with the various types of bullying.

Our musical play on this vital
topic was created with the guidance and input of one
of the world's foremost authorities on the subject of
bullying in schools, Dr. Kenneth Rigby of the University
of Southern Australia. Dr. Rigby is the author of many
publications including the books, "Bullying in Schools
and What To Do About It" and "Stop the Bullying". Here's
what Dr. Rigby has to say about the work our writers
put into the creation of this play.
"As
well as being entertaining and good fun, the ideas and
suggestions in the production about how young children
can help themselves - and others - when, or if, they
are being harassed or bullied at school are highly practical
and based upon sound research." -
Dr. Kenneth Rigby
"Kid-Safe Productions
is making a real and meaningful difference in the lives
of young people by providing them with fun and educational
programs that aid in the awareness and prevention of
child abuse and harassment. We are pleased to partner
with Kid-Safe to help raise community awareness about
these very important issues. "-

| After the play... |
After seeing our plays, we know it's important to continue talking
with kids about the topics covered in order to enhance their understanding
of them. To help get started with this, we
include a fun and creative colouring work-book to
be provided to each child for completion with their teacher
and/or parent.
The booklet outlines and re-iterates the play's
key messages creating an important basis for discussion
between adults and the kids they care about. From
there, frequently seeking out and making use of teachable
moments as well as staying involved in, and aware
of, the activities going on in children's lives,
helps create a basis for continuing to help protect
them. Here is the cover of our bullying colouring
book! |

"My son and daughter talked about
the play all weekend and there were many parents
that were appreciative of the fact that we asked
you to come and talk to the kids on this issue
which seems to be getting more out of hand each
day."
Melissa Santagato, Parent
Council Representative, (TCDSB)
